In 1778, Fort Barton was the staging area for the invasion of Aquidneck Island, which led to the Battle of Rhode Island. The site has 3 miles of trails and an
observation tower covering 80 acres of open space.
At the right rear of the fort area, follow a gravel path down a set of steps, through a narrow corridor bordered by a wire fence and stone wall, to the forest where the nature trails are located. Primary trails are blazed in red and secondary trails are blazed in blue. Following the red trail, you'll cross several brooks, including the unusually named Sin and Flesh brook. The trail crosses the brook several more times before rejoining the corridor trail back to the fort. Oak, Beech, and holly are common in the interior forests. You'll also note outcroppings of puddingstone, a pebbly conglomerate that looks like a bunch of stones cemented together into a boulder.
